30 Years of Effort – 15 Minutes of Fame?

I had the good fortune to be featured as one of the “world-class architects” in the South Shore region, which encompasses Northwestern Indiana and Southwestern Michigan.

The article in Shore Magazine can be seen at this site: http://bit.ly/gbhRJX.

Considering I have been an architect for over thirty years, yet started my own firm in the past six, it is interesting to reflect upon how one’s efforts are noted and rewarded.

When I started my own practice in 2005, I wanted to become involved in residential work and learn the ins and outs of the residential industry.  I have realized my talents for traditional architecture in residential design and feel most comfortable  with this design style.  What has been most gratifying is working with the clients I have educated  about good architecture practices in their homes and witnessing how it can help them achieve their “dream home”.  The results in my educational efforts have been positive referrals from all my clients.  That alone has made the effort worthwhile, for without a satisfied client, there is no satisfaction in this business.

The other contribution that I feel makes for a great architectural experience is having a sensible cost approach to a project and being respectful of the client’s budget.  In most assignments, this is a big challenge.  Since I am teamed with the builder Steve Kelly at G&K Development, I feel our combined experience brings a very well-rounded approach to budgeting semi-custom and custom designs for new homes.

We’ll see how years of experience translate in this fleeting moment of fame.
